There’s No School Like the Old School

November 30, 2009

Oscar Wilde, sometime love of my literary life, once said, “Everything popular is wrong.” Well, sometimes he’s right on with that one and sometimes he’s not. Considering young people who like and blog about art, you might think that “popular” art is anything new, edgy or obtuse. A room full of oranges accompanied by video screens showing people peeling oranges might blow up your local young art blog but what about the classics?

He also said, "to love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong love affair." Considering how he's dressed, it's no surprise he loved himself.

Everyone is always looking for the next new thing, right? Well, if that’s what we’re applying the above Wilde quote to, the new or otherwise known as “the popular,” then shucks, I’m gonna have to concur with my dear friend Oscar. That being said, let’s take a trip to the storied Metropolitan Museum of Art right here in New York.

First of all, the incredible Robert Frank show, put together by my home team, The National Gallery of Art in DC, is game changing.

Trolley, New Orleans

The exhibit, entitled, “Looking In: Robert Frank’s The Americans” celebrates the 50th anniversary of Frank’s seminal The Americans book of black and white photos of, you guessed it, Americans!

"New York City" To me, the eyebrows say it all.

But seriously, if you aren’t familiar with Frank or The Americans here’s a quick sum up: after a short period of indifference at its publication in 1959, critics and the public alike, wised up to the brilliance of Frank’s simple yet powerful street photography.

Charleston, North Carolina

This show at the Met brings the original prints back together plus contact sheets and earlier works by Frank, who still lives and shoots in New York.

Movie Premiere, Hollywood

It’s only on until January 3rd so make sure you get on over to check it out.

Annnnd, as if that weren’t enough incentive for you to get on that 6 train then listen to this. If you’re an art nerd like me, or if you just like American history or interesting beautiful stuff, make sure to take a look at American Stories: Paintings of Everyday Life, 1765-1915.

Watson and the Shark by John Singleton Copley

The appeal of this exhibit may lie in its simplicity: regular people leading regular lives.

The New Bonnet by Francis WIlliam Edmonds

These images give us an idea of how quickly and dynamically American life changed over a relatively short period of time.

The Power of Music by William Sidney Mount

Some may find classic works of art like these staid or impertinent to our modern lives in the 21st century but the themes and humanity, the facial expressions and fashion, are all too familiar and prove that we could all learn something from these American masters.

The Artist in His Museum by Charles Wilson Peale

In many ways, our very own American stories may not be so very different. This special exhibit also closes in January on the 24th so hurry it up and take in some American Stories. Ya heard?

The Jolly Flatboatmen by George Caleb Bingham (a favorite since I was a wee van Peebles)

Sunday Funday in Upstate NY!

November 30, 2009

I love to get away. Who doesn’t? New York City is a treasure trove of fun on a daily basis. So much to do and explore. There also exists a whole world right outside the city waiting to be explored. I needed a great spa experience. It’s one thing to go to a spa in the city, relax and feel zen but, the moment you step out those doors you are back in the hustle and bustle. I needed more. Enter Buttermilk Spa.

I hopped in the ride and headed north on I-87 to the teeny town of Milton, NY. I arrived at the spa and immediately felt 10 lbs lighter. The spa is known for its Eco-friendly philosophy. The building utilizes the power of the sun and earth to heat the sauna, steam room and mineral pool using both solar and geo thermal energy. The view from the pool was amazing. I scheduled a hot stone massage. I arrived early to take advantage of the sauna. After a few minutes, my masseuse came to find me. I enjoyed an awesome 90 minute treatment. The ambiance in the room was totally relaxing with soothing music and subtle natural lighting.

No Ceilings by Lil Wayne

November 26, 2009

Lil Wayne is facing some jail time. Unfortunately in the big house there will be ceilings. But I think Lil Wayne will get past that during his stay in the slammer. He has a Postive Mental Attitude and recently released this mixtape to reflect that called “No Ceilings”.

It features remixes of all the current pop hits, re-rapped by Weezy into greatness. My favorite female rapper in the game Nicki Minaj is on the “Sweet Dreams” Beyonce sampled song, her verse slays it!!! My favorite track from the tape to drop in the club is the track “No Ceilings” which is a remix of “I Got a Feeling” by Black Eyed Peas. Lil Wayne makes this song bearable.

Thank you Lil Wayne.

Serenity in the Concrete Jungle

November 20, 2009

I coexist in several communities; Hey Girl Hey, Art, Fashion, Wellness, and I have to say that the Russian Turkish Baths is way up there! It has without a doubt been a reliable source of detoxification and relaxation. We can all get high strung and stressed in this city, and frankly I really don’t know where I would be without the baths!

Pepsi Music Mic Pass

November 20, 2009

Having a radio show is a brand new dream of mine. It’s a vision I’ve been having lately in the back of my mind that needs to come to the front ASAP. At first I was thinking about my service to music and being the first to introduce new records to all the ears. I know what a valuable service that can be to emerging artists.  I also know about some sisters of mine called Hey Girl Hey. We have A LOT to say about a whole LOT. I got a taste of radio in the studio the other day for Pepsi Music Mic Pass. Maybe talk radio is in my future?

Nevertheless, in an awesome world wide web series in music….Yahoo & Pepsi have teamed up to Pass the Mic to up and coming MCs from around the country. Houston was the last stop and now, my home… NYC! I’m a big fan of 88 Keys & love hearing new emerging talent. I think the entire NYC Mic Pass flows so well. It was just plain fun to get in the studio and imagine a Cottontail related radio show coming together one day (I can dream!) To watch & hear Krista & Avery in the studio singing their hearts out and writing this song was amazing, their freestyle and harmony with the melody was an awesome experience.

Check it out!
